About Me

Susan Portrait

Capturing life's priceless moments is something that brings me great joy. The fresh snuggles of a newborn, the captivating smiles of a child, the inquisitive curiosity of a toddler, the transition of a young adult graduating from high school, the bond between siblings, and the love between family members are all things I strive to portray through my photography.

I am a mom to two beautiful girls and one adorable little boy. I live with my three kids and wonderful husband in Howell, MI. I am also a former school teacher. I taught for seven years and when my youngest daughter was born in April 2008, I decided to quit so I could stay home with my kids.

In the years that I was teaching, I always had a nagging voice in the very back of my mind asking, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I have always loved photography, but it wasn't until I bought my first digital SLR camera (my trusty little Rebel XTi) that I really immersed myself in learning all I could about photography. I used and abused that camera and it trudged along with me as a faithful companion as I learned. I now shoot with my amazing Canon 7D, and I hope to never stop learning and growing as a photographer.

I have always loved art, but I felt crippled in that area because of my left-brained tendencies, which leave me almost entirely unable to draw, sketch, paint, or otherwise recreate images from my imagination in a way that is recognizable to others. Digital photography has beautifully blended my love of art with the science and technology that I am comfortable with. It has allowed me to express myself in a way that I have not able to with other mediums.

The picture on the right was taken by a man named George. He was a fellow student in a photography class I was taking just after my daughter was born. The baby tagged along with me on one of our photo shoots, and I am very thankful to George that he captured this memory for me. That is what I want to do for others: capture precious memories.

Capturing life as it happens is what I like best. I prefer photo sessions to be laid back, normal, natural, and fun. For family shoots, although I do have to direct certain poses and shots, I like to simply tag along on an outing and capture what happens naturally.
